PT Chase is approaching the end of an eventful flying career - forty years long so far, but with not many more left in the air.
In this true story of the working life of an airline pilot he takes us back to his first job in 1975, flying elderly DH Doves on four-day journeys out to the Middle East, remaining there for eight or nine months on air survey contracts. There are many adventures in his formative flying years, both in the air and on the ground, in an Arabia wholly unrecognisable to a visitor today.
After several life-threatening experiences he leaves the Doves and flies F.27 turboprops in the UK for a number of years. Finally he joins a UK jet operator, flying ad hoc charter work for his last three decades as a pilot, both around Europe and on longhaul widebody jets to many exotic parts of the world.
There are several brushes with death, and several more with history, in a long and varied flying career. You will meet ageing Nazis, lovelorn Americans, gun-toting bandits and many other characters, fly Boeings and Airbus, and have rare insights into life down route and behind the flight-deck door.
Then in 2014 and 2016, right at the end of his career, his flying life is turned upside down. Twice.
PT Chase is still flying as an airline pilot today - it could be him taking you on your next flight. Only two parts of this short memoir are made up - the name of the airline, and the name of the author ...
