In A Backroom Murder, readers are transported back to the Hollywood of the early 1960s. Author Irene Mattei sets the stage with a nostalgic atmosphere, signaling the transition from Old Hollywood’s big-star glamour to the modern era. While the television industry is quickly building its dominance over the movie biz, tech companies are also experiencing a boom—particularly West Electronics. But something strange is afoot at the thriving company, and it’s more than the typical office tedium.
Mattei introduces us to a wide cast of characters working at West, which is bursting at the seams due to growth. From stressed-out secretaries to colleagues tangled up in unseemly affairs, there’s plenty of fodder for drama in the workplace. Unfortunately for the protagonist—a sharp and inquisitive temp worker named Sara—the dead body of one of the employees is found on the premises shortly after she arrives.
As everyone else scrambles to establish their alibis and deal with the fallout, Sara uses her natural instincts to piece together the puzzle surrounding the shocking homicide. It’s the internal worlds and interactions of Mattei’s deeply defined characters that keep readers in thrall to the very end.

Are you curious about your coworkers? Do you ever include analyses of their foibles in your conversations over coffee? If so, you may find this mystery as interesting as I did. Its leisurely pace allows for descriptions of a fascinating mix of characters at an electronics import firm in early 60's Hollywood. Portable tape recorders are the next new thing and men whose relationships were established in WWII run the company. The "detective" is an aspiring actress working as a temporary secretary whose curiosity gets her into some very uncomfortable situations, even when she can see them coming. I thought I knew who the killer was a few times, but was surprised when it was revealed. If you're looking for a book that will keep you up all night, this isn't it, but the news is enough to keep me awake, so I'm looking forward to reading more mysteries by this author.Product details

A Backroom Murder edition by Irene Mattei Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Irene Mattei has set the stage for a Polaroid-color mystery set in the early sixties in sunny, seedy California. With character types (hilariously predictable) as one would find in a small electronics distributors warehouse, found me envisioning a cross between The Office with an Angie Dickinson vehicle of the days of avocado and harvest gold color-tones. Really, laughed out loud as things wound out of control! A light, enjoyable book.
great characters. great story. old hollywood comes alive!
Really enjoyed this book. Well developed characters (some easy to like, some less so). Well written dialog. Steady plot. Looking forward to the sequel. Hope Sarah is a recurring character...
A Backroom Murder adds to the list of amateur detectives a new type - temporary clerical worker. It is an accurate recreation of the dynamics of office work with characters that ring true. I hope that there will be more adventures for our part-time actress part-time temp in the future.
Dear mystery book fans, if you enjoy immersing yourself in a suspenseful, well articulated story, one you can settle into and forget about the whirlwind of today's world, 'A Backroom Murder' is a perfect fit. What drew me to read Ms. Mattei's book at first was the title. It is indeed like a tapestry which slowly unravels. Try it, you just might be glad you did.
A beautifully written totally delightful book where the characters pulled me and kept me reading well past midnight. It brought back memories of my many work environments. The office intrigue is so much fun and feels very real. So is the milieu of Los Angeles in the early 60s. All of this surrounds a super who-done-it in a book that is a joy to read.
